Sweet Viburnum Help

I have a row of about 15 Viburnum Shrubs in my backyard. There are two of these that are next to each other that continue to struggle. Note: the other 13 have grown several inches with no problems in the last two years where as the two with problems I have re-planted twice now with new plants. It begins where the tips of the leaves turn brown and then fall off. One of these two lost most of its leaves over the last month, but then put on new leaves and has come back nice and green. (A few spots starting to develop on the mature leaves). The other, however lost all it's leaves and the branches have grown, nice green stem & has started putting back on small green leaves. However, the small leaves already have the reddish brown on the tips of the leaves.

I thought it might be soil conditions in this one spot, so when I replanted earlier this year I dug a much larger whole & replaced the dirt with new dirt (Miracle Grow Garden Vegetable Dirt in a Bag). Still having the problems though. None of the other thirteen plants are effected, and all are in a row within about 3 feet of each other. I don't see root rot, any bugs, and I can't say for sure whether it is one of the possible fungi.

Any suggestions??

if i understand.. 2 years ago.. you panted 15.. and expected 100% success???

most likely.. poor stock.. on those two plants.. and coincidence that they ended up next to each other ... you would have to dig them up and find out why ... but not this time of year ... and by the time you have dug them out to find out.. you may as well replace with healthy new stock ... in other words.. it might be a root issue .... fromt eh pots.. or the digging if ball and burlap ...

in the alternative.. the soil in that area is poor for some reason.. and the water provided is not moving thru it for the plant to thrive .... unfortunately i presume you cant recall those two holes...

and the other alternative... somehow.. how did something with those two plants at planting ... that caused it ... and since we dont know how you planted them... we cant go much further.. e.g. you threw fert in the holes at planting.. and did too much with these two ...

had you asked... i would have not suggested a monoculture across 15 plants .. and if you replace.. you might want to think about some diverse plants ... rather than more of the same...

Ken, Thanks for the response. Out of the 15 plants I did not expect to have a 100% success rate. And I did not. I had two die, in which I replaced only to have the exact same two giving me problems now. Drainage is not a problem. When I planted the first time I did mix Humus/manure with the dirt & thought I might have over fertilized. However, on the second go around I removed all the dirt and replaced with new dirt & no fertilizer at all.

We wanted the same plant as a privacy hedge to block out the neighbor and provide a back drop for the two maple trees. Thus, happy with our choice, just want these two plants to survive as the others are.
