Pruning Forsythia

If I prune my forsythia this week (it's 7/29), will I still have bloom next spring? How can I tell whether the bloom for next year is already set?

I need to prune them before they completely overtake my steps, but I don't want to lose next year's display.

RE: Pruning Forsythia

The best time is in the spring after the blooming stops and fades. Pruning forsythia in late summer or fall will reduce the number of flowers in the spring since forsythia blooms on old wood and sets buds soon after new growth appears.

Maybe you can cut out a few of the oldest branches that are closest to and getting in the way of the steps... cutting them down close to the ground. This will leave the rest of the shrub to bloom next season. Next season, immediately after blooming, prune the branches as you see fit or take out a few more of the oldest stems. They look so nice with their natural, arching habit. But so bad when sheared with only a "crust" of bloom - as someone on one of the forums described them.

google REJUVENATION PRUNING OF FLOWERING SHRUBS ....

the point.. is to remove 1/3 of the largest branches ... so that next spring.. you will have 2/3 of the show ..

after next years flowers.. remove the second 1/3 .....

until you have a new shrub ...

since you will have some new prunings .... root them in water.. then in media.. and then plant them in fall ... where they have more space to be what they are..

and then start thinking about how this shrub has way too much potential to be that close to your steps ... and get rid of that one ... since you will have others ....

good luck
