Wine and Roses Wigelia: Sick?

While pruning my Wine and Roses Wigelia yesterday, I noticed that all of the leaves about 6" down are dried up, brown and dead.
I have two others next to this one that are as healthy as can be. The shrub is about 3.5' - 4' high before trimming. Does this sound like a familiar problem to anyone? I'm in southwest MI, Zone 6b.

hard to tell you much of anything w/o a pic ..

that intense heatwave last week.. did some leaf damage on various things.. here in adrian mi ...

and yes.... independent plants.. do independent things .... each has its own micro climate ...

dont know what else to tell you w/o that pic
