Thick shrub in damp shade

I am trying to determine a good thick shrub that will grow in damp shade. I want to put thick shrubs between me and my annoying neighbor, problem is the house are kind of close together and as a result the area doesn't get much sun. The soil is pretty damp and mossy. (I plan to till the soil before planting.)
Thank you all for your advise!
Peter

It would help a great deal if we knew where you live.
A picture of the area you're dealing with would be nice too.

what mike said ...

and what is the soil type.. and why is there a lack of proper drainage ....

and have you ruled out conifers???

tilling is not the solution to your soil problems ....
