| Hello, I recently bought a new home in the metro Milwaukee area, and have some very nosey neighbors in the property directly behind me. I really do not want to put up a fence, instead I would prefer a living wall of some type. I will need the plants to cover approx 100 feet along my rear lot line.
So the question is what would you recommend for such a living wall? I thought about planting a bunch of arbo's but was looking for other opinions. Please help!!! your ideas mean alot to me! |

| You haven't defined the wideness or narrowness of where you are going to plant - so I'm going to assume there is no limit. I'd not invest in the plainness of Arborvitae or any other species that contributes only one value or season of interest. You will be amazed, once you look around, at the screening capability of deciduous plants - and the seasonal interest to you and the value to wildlife. I'd plant a variety of flowering shrubs that will reach the height you want to screen your neighbors. Viburnums, dogwoods, magnolias, witch hazels, crabapples, redbuds, hydrangeas, forsythia, weigela, and many many more species will reach above eye-level screening. They will also flowering at varying seasons, fruit with abandon, and generate fabulous fall color. Combine all these values, and see if that doesn't make your enjoyment of the living wall much more important than any annoyance that neighbors create. |

| Heynow, Go buy yourself a fence, not an expensive one, a bamboo or reed fence, and then this fall, look around at local nurseries when they get their conifers (evergreens) in and plant a variety of different bushes staggered in front of the fence. You will have instant privacy for right now, and the evergreens will hide the fence eventually, or mabey even decidious shrubs mixed with some evergreens, Staggar them when you plant them for privacy. That's what I would do. When the bushes and trees grow in, you can remove fence. Good Luck to you. |

| If you use 'Wintergreen' aka 'Hetz Wintergreen' arb., you will have a very attractive form of Arborvitae (foliage is reminiscent of cypress) that will grow tall and narrow & very quickly; always 3 feet a year minimum, after establishment. It's my favorite all-around arborvitae for screening purposes. In front of that you could do as ViburnumValley suggests... should that be of interest, to you. 'Wintergreen' should be spaced 4' apart, for your application and will only become 4-5' wide in 30 or more years. Dax |

| I used decidious screening on both sides of my property. Evergreens bore the living heck out of me. I used a mix of the following for the backdrop: Then there is a mix of shrubs and perrenials for the middle and border. To help you further we need to know: |
