odd year for the mophead!

We have one new-wood-blooming Hydrangea macrophylla that came with the property back in 1999. It manages to bloom every three years or so - usually just before I'm ready to yank it :-) This year, it's doing a very odd bloom. Most of the flowers are the normal mophead balls - but one is just a single, flat flower! It's actually quite interesting and pretty.

I'm guessing that something must have killed all of the original flowerbud except one floret, and the stem put all it's energy into that one floret, making it larger than normal. Has anyone ever seen something like this before?
