Need Philadelphus advice

Late last fall, my Mock Orange sprouted a shoot about 1.5' away from the shrub, toward the foundation. Thinking it was a new plant from seed, I was delighted. Then I realized it was much more likely a sucker. I wanted to move it but kept delaying because I wasn't sure what I'd find root-wise. So, now I'm thinking of the coming winter. Assuming this is a sucker, should I cut the attaching root now? Is there a way to do that gradually, so I don't risk losing it?

one stress is enough in my world.. it seems counter-productive to stress the heck out of it now.. and then again in fall when you move it ....

you have two options ...

do some gentle digging.. and see if it has some roots.. if it does.. cut it off.. and pot it up.. to generate a good roots structure for planting at the proper time in fall ... put the pot in shade until fall .. and keep it watered ...

or just do it all in fall .. and skip the potting ... warm days.. and cool nights.. and it should grow enough roots to survive next summer ... with a good mulching and some supplemental watering in drought ...

One stress... wouldn't that be a nice world! Thanks, Ken! Waiting till fall sounds like the ticket. Less stress on me.;)
