vertical shrub for shade

I would like ideas for a vertical shrub or small tree to plant along the side of my house. The spot gets only a little direct sun; it's mostly shaded by the house. Right now we have two scraggly evergreens, vaguely Christmas-tree shaped of unknown type (maybe yew?) that don't look good.

Most shade tolerant shrubs seem not to be vertical. I'd be willing to try something looser in form that's still taller than it is wide (e.g. fothergilla), instead of risking a ratty arborvitae or the like.

Any ideas for me? Thanks!

Look at Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil' or Buxus sempervirens 'Graham Blandy'. Both are very columnar in habit, hardy for your area and quite shade tolerant.

Thanks, gardengal! Love the boxwood (sky pencil is not my favorite). Do you think it would do OK despite the lack of sun in my location? Should I worry about boxwood blight?
