Neinbark disease

I inherited three Neinbark shrubs when my husband and I bought a high rise (eighth floor) condo with a 1200 sq. ft. terrace in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in 2003. We have very large wooden planters with a sprinkling system. Until this year the Neinbarks were thin (maybe) but a nice purple color and seemed healthy. I pruned them yearly and fertilized twice yearly with Osmocote. Just recently I noticed that the purple color of the leaves is changing to green -- the veins remain purple -- and there are lots of holes in the leaves. I'd say the shrub is either diseased, distressed (heat, sun, wind) or bothered by some bug that I can't see. Can anyone help?

RE: Neinbark disease

a picture would sure help ...

with you short growing season... i am concerned that your shrubs are highly over fertilized ....

osmacote can come in anything from 4 to 9 month formulas.. and if you gave it two doses.. of even 4 month stuff.. for what is basically a 6 month growing season in z5 ... or z6 ... then it has been given nearly twice more than it probably needs ...

what about that picture?? and i wouldnt mind seeing the view of chi-town also .. sounds way cool .....
