emarld n gold enonymous shrub, woody masses on stems

Greentings-
I noticed these pulpy, woody masses shaped like balls that are attached to the stems. I cut them off but have no idea what they are. Is this a disease or some sort of pest? I've had scales before on the shrubs but these woody masses seem to take over a shrub and one shrub eventually just sort of stopped growing. It is alive but barely, and I cut several of these masses off the stems. Anyone have any idea what they are?
Thanks,
Mike

Looks like I have crown gall and just planted a new emarld n gold in the same hole. Hate to have to dig it up. Any way I can treat the new shrub?

i dont understand...

you have dealt with the horrible scale problem which is inherent on these plants ...

and now you have gall..

but you keep buying the same plant..

at what point to do say.. this plant is not worth it ...

i got rid of all my euonomyous .. because of the problems...

next time it displeases you.. think about the hundreds of alternatives that are out there.. besides this bigboxstore favorite ...

Ken-
Thanks for your thoughts.
The other two are doing fine so far and are about 5 years old. Had three lining the sidewalk so wanted to match them. I read up on gall and probably would not have purchased another one. So will keep this in mind now.
