Problem with Deutzia scabra

Last summer I took some cuttings from a mature D. scabra bush and propagated them in my greenhouse. They put out new roots and green leaves and I planted two of them in the yard this year. They are growing slowly, but the leaves have taken on a reddish, mottled appearance, which I assume is not normal. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?:

its not uncommon.. in general ...

its stressed ...

the key for me.. is that bud looks fine ..

perhaps it just wasnt ready for free range ... at that size .. i would have been tempted to grow it in a pot for this season.. and planted it in fall .. when it had a greater root mass ...

Is it my imagination or is it planted with a lot of the roots and incipient roots exposed? Or is that part of the mulch behind it I can see?

That's all mulch. It was in a 4" pot for about 6 months before I planted it and there are no surface roots.

Ditto what Ken said about the buds. I think it will likely be just fine.
