Spirea magic carpet vs double play gold

I have decided to get a couple fine wine weigelas for our front landscaping. I would like to coordinate the fine wine with a spirea. I have seen the magic carpet in photos and it's beautiful. I have had double play gold recommened as a compliment as well.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these, or both? I want something that will be under 2 ft tall and have great season long color. I know the magic carpet has great colors from spring until frost.

I had my heart set on the magic carpet. I haven't seen fine wine in pittsburgh, pa. so I was going to order it online from shrub source.com. Dave's watchdog has a handful of reviews, all positive. They have the doubleplay gold but not the magic carpet, so that's why I was considering the DP.

Any thoughts? I know ordering online is iffy but they have a guarantee and reasonably priced.

RE: Spirea magic carpet vs double play gold

I thought I saw a post like this earlier...but my vote is Magic Carpet. You get a unique color in the spring and fall. With the double gold, the gold is just more intense in the spring and fall.

I have all three of the shrubs. I noticed the golden color spirea get leaf scorch more easily as well, ie limemound, goldmound, double play, dakota, etc.

This is a fairly accurate image of the magic carpet spring growth: http://www.findmeplants.co.uk/photos/spiraea_magiccarpet.jpg

The fall color is very similar, more russet orange.

That was me prior, whaas! You have been so helpful in a couple of my posts, so thank you!
I was set on the magic carpet but since the doubleplay was available from the same vendor as I was getting the weigela, i figured I'd ask everyone's opinon on the doubleplay.

thanks again!

RE: Weigela

I forgot to mention on the Weigela.

Fine Wine gets about 4' X 4' and is more compact and tight/upright.

Shining Sensation gets about 5' x 4' and is more arching and spreading if left to its mature size.

Not sure if you prefer one look vs. the other. The flip side is that Shining Sensation has sporadic reblooms.

The other smaller purple leafed weigelas varietes do not, ie Fine Wine, Mighnight Wine, Wine and Roses.
