transplanting philodendron

We have a large philodendron, at least we think that's what it is. It looks like a Xanadu, that type of leaf, however, the leaves on this thing are huge! The whole plant has gotten quite large for the space it's in (it may be as old as 30 years old). It's right at the back corner of the house and is blocking access to the side of the house. We'd like to transplant it and would like information on how to do that. We live in north San Diego county, our soil is terrible, hard, crumbly. We're spraying insecticide right now to control fleas. It's totally open and exposed to all day sunlight and right now is extremely dry. We're not sure where we're going to put it, but it would be a shame to just throw it away. Thanks for your help!
