In the spring I trimmed my willow shrubs and tossed the branches into the trash. One of my perennials was flopped over so I used on of the willow branches I had just cut off as a stake. A few weeks ago I noticed that the wooden stake is now a full-leafing willow shrub!
I searched this forum and saw someone had posted that you can indeed grow a new willow shrub from a branch. Tonight I cut about 5 branches and planted them in the ground, hoping for an entire family of willow shrubs.
That was at 3:00 pm. It is now 8:00 pm and those branches are already showing signs of wilting and expiration. Did I do it wrong? Is it just bad timing (I live in Zone 6, SE Pennsylvania where it is very hot this week). Should I have waited for the fall to do it? Must I wait until next spring? Will they be OK if I continue to water them well? I have to believe that if it worked for one branch it will work for others.
Thanks so much!
