| I have seen a few rose of sharon bush form and single trunk tree's at my local nursery (but the single trunks tree type are not in the colors I want. Can I buy a Rose of Sharon bush form and cut the branchs off and make it a single branch tree form? Not sure how to do this..Do you have to stake it while it is young to get the main trunk to grown straight?? |

| The problem with trying to purchase a rose of sharon pruned to grow as a shrub, when you want to train it instead to grow as a tree, is the way the growers kept pruning out the main leader sprout and kept the side branching sprouts, just so that the shrub would fill out better for a quick sale. If you want to train a rose of sharon into a small tree form; then it is best purchase a liner size rose of sharon or to grow your own from a cutting you take. You will want to start with the Rose of Sharon cultivars which are reported to be strong growers. Then from the time they are young sprouts, simply prune out any modified leaders that try to grow. Especially those that, if not pruned out, would have formed a sharp 'V' crotch. |
