We planted a 'Hakuro-nishiki' willow almost 8 years ago. It has been a beautiful shrub turn tree, at almost 10 feet tall and wide, it has been one of my favorites in my garden. Sadly this year it is just DEAD. Any ideas? It looked great last year, but just never came back to life this year. I would love t plant another one in the same spot, but am afraid to since I am not sure what happened to it.

Any extreme weather episodes or other changes to site conditions, including chemical applications? If you buy a new one try this improved version, it is more conspicuous.

No, our winter was pretty mild. It is in a protected area between another tree and corner of the house. We have never used any chemicals on it near it....that is why it just dying was so strange. Thanks for the link I will check that one out!

Definitely odd...I love these plants as well. I have 3 back on my lotline. I haven't seen the Flamingo around yet..hopefully it starts showing up. Are you sure its dead? Did you scrap the stems? If any are green, cut back 1/3 of the thickest stems all the way to the ground. Willows benefit from renewal pruning. Being 10ft in 8 years tells me you haven't done any.
|
Thanks, I have not scrapped the stems, the willow has no "green" leaf growth at all, but I will try what you said tomorrow. No we have never pruned it, it has always done well just as it and we liked that it was huge :)

Try cutting it all the way down to about a foot from the ground. It should rebound fast, with brighter twigs and a more pinkish tinge to the leaves. Don't wait too long, so the new growth has time to harden off before winter. Good luck! :)

Hi, I just planted this same willow about a month ago and it is starting to lose all it's leaves this last week and looks like it is dying. I don't think it's having transplant shock, but something else. Any suggestions or help!?!
