| I planted a lovely Honey Maid Holly (Ilex x meserveae Honey Maid) about three weeks ago, and have been watering it faithfully since then (every day for a week, then every other day).
This evening, I noticed some big dark brown spots on several leaves - one each centered on a few of the leaves and almost as wide and long as the leaves themselves - and other leaves curled up and a lighter brown. We have been having super hot weather, like so many other regions - several days in the upper '90s. Any thoughts on whether the heat may be causing this, or something else? Thanks for any suggestions. |

| hard to suggest much based on words alone.. but they remind me of black spot on roses.. which lead me to leaf spot on holly.. pix at the link... flip to the web side.. its a fungus ... and most fungus thrive at night.. when there is little wind and lots of humidity.. and too much heat.. which is called august in most parts of the US .. lol .. one simple solution is to insure that the plants go into darkness dry.. which means no evening spraying with the hose ... if that is not the problem.. we either need a picture.. or you need to talk with your county extension office ken |

| It may also have been in a crowded situation at the nursery, and now that it's out in the open sun, the new growth is getting burned. Mike |

| Thanks, everyone! I couldn't remember how to post photos, so I skipped that. Today it was even worse - whole branches are drying up. I suspect that the heat is at least partially to blame. I appreciate the no-night-watering info particularly - I do water in the evenings, so I need to shift that to the morning to see if that helps. If I chop those withering branches off, should the rest of the plant be okay, do you think? Thanks again! |

| Thanks, Ken. I will upload photos this evening; I thought I had them on my phone, but I must have copied them to my laptop and deleted them from my phone. I'm sorry to say that nearly all of the holly is now brown. I am almost certainly going to need to replace it. :( |

| Though I'm probably going to have to replace this altogether, I'd still like to know what it is if you can make any more educated guesses, so I can avoid something like this in the future if possible. Thanks! |

| Here's one more picture, after it started browning but before it started going way downhill. Such a pretty shrub - so disappointing. :( |

| its not blackspot or a mildew.. or any of that stuff i said... the pix rule all that out what is the cement you were standing on.. and how long has it been there.. recent construction??? up here in MI.. i would not have planted 3 weeks ago ... its got to be some kind of transplant shock... if warrantied.. return it.. if you have not already .. if you can get a replacement... plant it in october ... when the weather is much more forgiving ... set the pot on the north side of the house in full shade to insure the pot doesnt get too hot in the sun whats your soil type .. and what was the media in the pot .... ken |
