Let's just say hypothetically that you planted a bunch of stevens hollies, italian cypresses and crape myrtles a couple of weeks in the brutal dead heat of Texas summer. How many weeks or months would need to pass until you felt safe that the plants would survive?

Can't answer that, sorry. There are simply too many variables. Soil type, soil drainage, pre-planting preparation, planting practices, post-planting maintenance, condition of the plants, size of the plants, and more, all come into play regarding the success or failure of woody plantings. The terrible heat is just one factor...an important one, but only one.

through at least one winter .... and probably two.. for you to be sure the are FULLY ESTABLISHED ..... its all about growing a root mass sufficient to deal with all the variables listed by rhizo ... and then some ... ken

Spent the last two weeks of June in the north Dallas area. 90 was a cool day. If they live through one summer, 1) most of your worries should pass and 2) I'd be amazed. Ü tj

With reasonable care, generally 2 years. When it's especially hot, I rig temporary shade. That may look hokey but it helps the woodies survive.

Would you say if the shrubs had sprouted some new leaves that the new growth could be taken as a good sign?

well.. new leaves sure means its not dead .. lol ... but it doesnt mean it ESTABLISHED .... nor free range .... it still requires your full attention.. though it surely sounds like you are on the right track ken

So far so good! I have planted 17 shrubs and trees since the last week of June and so far all are alive with no signs of dying. They even have new growth. I planted a shantung maple, fig tree, pomegranate bush, 9 stevens hollies, 2 italian cypresses, and 3 crape myrtles of the dynamite and red rocket variety. It has been a super hot summer with most days lately over 100.
