| We have always wanted a sumac for its stunning fall color and stylish foliage. We picked up a Cutleaf staghorn sumac this week without realizing there is a Tiger Eye. After some online research we know the pros and cons of each:
Cutleaf Staghorn Sumac
Tiger eye sumac:
The planting site faces south and receives most of the day's sun. It is only 2' from the house, which adds to our concern whether the invasive root (although of a shrub) could cause a basement leak years later. We are still struggling whether to get the Tiger Eye cultivar instead. Any inputs? Thanks for suggestions. |

| Both sumacs have a shallow root system, so I wouldn't be concerned about drainage pipes etc.... The tiger eye will only grow to about 6 feet, where the cutleaf sumac will be double that size...12 feet.... Ian |

| A local nursery owner told us to prune the shrub frequently to prevent it from growing into a tree. That seems to be a good idea. But we still plan to move it to the backyard fence next spring to fully actualize its invasive potential. |

| Sometimes frequent pruning will "encourage" suckering more so than if you didn't prune it. |

| My school has one planted in the corner of two walls, its all relative, 12 feet isn't that huge. Underplanted with plumbago, which is slow to start but then covers nicely. It was always one of my favorites. Did you know you can make a drink from the fuzzy blooms? |
