American cranberry not doing well in heat

I planted an American cranberry bush last fall. It did very well throughout the winter, and up until about March. At that point, deer ate quite a bit of the foliage. Unfortunately, the leaves never really seemed to grow back. It has appeared to be languishing in the hot weather. There are just a few leaves left on the bush--it's mostly bare. There are about 8 branches coming up from the ground, and only half of those are still alive (or at least I see green when I scratch the bark). Will the bush recover as the weather cools down, or is there something seriously wrong with it? Thanks for any info.
