Ash leaf spirea runners/volunteers?

Hello,
I have a rather huge ash leaf spirea that has put out a number of offspring his year. As this shrub gets loads of beautiful feathery flowers each year, it is much admired by neighbors and passers-by. I would like to give the offspring to some friends and neighbors. My question is: do the offshoots grow by underground runners? If so, is it safe for me to just sever the runners? I'd hate to give them away and have everyone disappointed because they die. Thanks!

Sorbaria? Try digging up ones that have been in place for awhile (and therefore more likely to have a good tuft of roots beneath the point where sprouting occurred) when these are not in leaf.

Thanks bboy. Yes, a Sorbaria sp. When you say "not in leaf" do you mean late fall when all the leaves have fallen off? And is 2 months long enough for the sprouts? I've noticed them for at least that long.
