Pruning potentilla

I have a couple of potentilla fruticosa that are getting way too big and was wondering when and how severely they can be pruned. I love them and don't want to kill them, but they are covering everything around them.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Like spiraeas, these can be easiy rejuvenated by cutting back severely -- nearly to the ground -- in late winter or early spring. IME, it's next to impossible to kill a potentilla, except by providing poor drainage :-)

Thank you so much. I'd guessed it would be best to wait. I'll just squeeze around it until March and then prune it with the some of the other shrubs.
