We brought two lilacs with us from a much drier state. One is purple and the other is supposed to be yellow. They have been kept in pots for the last 4 years for the purple and have had the yellow for 2, so not much growth. They are in the ground now, finally, since our move to our own house. While the purple is doing wonderfully, the one that is supposed to be yellow ( hasn't bloomed yet) is covered in mildew. Is this common? I had lilacs when we lived here before but no mildew on any of them ever. I've never seen mildew on a lilac. Is this plant just going to be prone to it every year and if so what do I use on it?

Lilacs are susceptible to getting powdery mildew....It depends on the season (whether it gets it or not)....some seasons are worse than others.... The mildew will not kill your plant, just makes it unsightly...... Ian

Common lilacs are best planted in an unobtrusive spot, where you can enjoy the brief fragrance but not have them in your face the rest of the year when they have very little to offer.

OP If you're still here and haven't found a solution........ Spray with milk and water. Can't remember ratio but if you search you will find it. Works for lilacs and I've also used it on my roses.
