| I'm a gardening newbie and going through the first season in this house with numerous shrubs.
I have viburnums, hydrangeas and possibly spireas. Even among the viburnums, for example, there are so many varieties and their pruning needs and best time to prune vary. What are your favorite websites or methods for identifying shrubs? |

| Cut representative shoots and take them to places like nurseries and public gardens where they may have the same kinds. |

| Always helpful to know the arrangement of the leaves along the stem: opposite one another or alternate (viburnums are opposite as you can see on your own as are hydrangeas). Knowing just that alone can help narrow it down and rule out possibilities. Are the leaves single or compound, do they have teeth, small hairs? These are important characteristics. Of course knowing what the flowers look like really helps too, but that is not always possible. |
