| Can anyone help me identify this shrub? The leaves are opposite, however the pair spiral around the stem. The newer foliage has a definite red blush. There are 3 very sharp, short thorns in a radial pattern at the leaf axils. I must have planted it in my partly shady garden, but it's now getting taller and I need to know where this plant should find a permanent home (I am in southern Ontario.) Here are 2 photos:

| It's a barberry (Berberis), probably European Barberry (Berberis vulgaris). Tiny bristled teeth on the leaves and three spines at the leaf axis is a characteristic of Berberis vulgaris. Attractive but still the bane of wheat farmers everywhere. |
