| It looked great in the spring, but now this is what it looks like. Has anyone any idea what the problem is?

Dried out. Also possibly hit by some stray spray applied for some other purpose.

| Well, I know it hasn't been hit by any kind of a spray at all. Not a possibility. Here in Massachusetts, we have had a very unusual growing season. We had lots and lots of rain in May, June and part of July and almost set a record for the least amount of sunshine, ever. It's been maybe three weeks since the weather changed and we have now had no rain and lots of sun, heat and humidity. I did start seeing changes in the foliage while we were still having rain and cloudy weather. It is in an area with other pots that have been watered just about daily since the weather turned hot and none of the other pots are showing signs of drying out. I guess that is why I am confused. I am wondering if it has some kind of fungal disease or something from all the rain and cloudy weather. Here is a close up, I wonder if that helps at all?

Looks like a fungal disease usually referred to as leaf spot (not uncommon with Sambucus nigra).

That makes more sense to me. I wonder whether it will recover and come back next season, and whether I will continue to have problems with it. Maybe it's time to swear off all Sambucus. [g]

Try taking samples to Extension if you want to find out exactly what it is.

Thanks bboy, but here in Massachusetts, the Extension is really not very active. They are located in the far western part of the state on the University of Mass campus and I think they might be underfunded. They are at least 3 or 4 hrs away from me. At any rate, I am an organic grower, so I would assume finding out what it is, exactly, would result in a recommendation for some sort of fungicide? Which I wouldn't do any way. I am seriously considering just throwing it out, since I've already had trouble with one variety of Sambucus and if it has some sort of systemic disease, I would not want to take the chance of planting it into healthy soil.

This year has been moist as you know, so don't judge it on an unusual year. I'd spray (coat everything) with neem oil to keep that fungus down. See if that works. Dan

Prairiemoon2, are you sure? What about all the regional offices on their website? The UMassExtension program is pretty widely known even outside of Massachusetts. I've seen a number of their video programs. Maybe most of their organization is centralized, but their website doesn't give that impression.
Here is a link that might be useful: UMass Extension - In Your Community

Brandon, thanks for that link. Yes, there is a regional office near me, but I have no idea what they do there. I just followed all the links to submit a sample for identification of disease on a shrub, and the fee is $50. and it requires you to send the sample to UMASS Amherst by Priority Mail for within 48 hours delivery time, which costs another $5-$10. The shrub didn't cost me that much. They offer a few seminars, I notice, but again, they are held on the UMass Amherst campus, not at the local office. And it is $95. for the seminar. You can get your soil tested still, but again, you have to send it to UMass Amherst location. Years ago, you used to be able to drop it off at the local office, but not any more. Plus if you look around the website, you will see that their focus is on serving the Landscape and Agricultural Industry and not really the homeowner. I would be interested to know what their program is known for outside of Massachusetts. I haven't seen what they have available for video programs.

Dan, I appreciate that advice about the Neem Oil. I agree that this year is unusual. I didn't have problems with it last year. I guess I was thinking that it was more than just a leaf problem. It looks like most of the leaves are going to end up dropping off the shrub and I was figuring it wouldn't survive that. I'm not that knowledgeable about shrubs and I guess a lot. [g] Thanks for that idea. :-)

Hi pm, My reference has a list of 8 fungi affecting sambucus, then... Many fungi cause leaf spots on Sambucus. They are rarely important enough to warrant control measures Also, I think I recall reading somewhere that Umass explictly has a mission to support agriculture and outwardly de-supported homeowner assistance. I am closer to NH and I have investigated their extension services a few times. It did seemed more consumer/homeowner oriented, as I recall.
