Copper Nails

I've been told that driving copper nails into trees will kill them. any truth in this? I'm asking because I have a row of bottlebrush buckeyes that all in the same soil & conditions but the 2 at the east end of the row are not doing as well. the leaves have browned out but there is still new growth. & these have not grown at the same rate as the others. one difference in there planting is that their roots are in the same area as where my copper water line enters the property hence the copper question.
