| Hello
I'm thinking about planting a forsythia intermedia shrub around the side of my house. I know there are literally TONS of cultivars to choose from, but that's why I'm asking you, who have experience with such matters. I'm looking for the longest blooming, showiest forsythia cultivar that you know of. I know that they are all very showy when they bloom, but which one is the showiest?? |

| What size are you looking for? Here are my young 2 yr old Fiesta Forsythias. They have red stems on new growth and the foilage is lightly varigated in full sun. Be careful with what you select some flower buds are not hardy to zone 5. Like Fiesta Forsythia select a variety that has another feature besides the flowers. For example Sunrise Forsythia has maroon fall color. |

| In my humble, etc., the best forsythia there is cannot hold a candle to any of the corylopsis species, especially the hybrid Winterthur. Much more graceful, softer primrose yellow flowers, earlier by 2 weeks, fragrant, highly frost resistant when blooming. Many corylopsis are still listed as Z6 plants, but I've grown all but one species in Z5 for at least 10 years. Fairweather Gardens, Forestfarm and Rarefind Nursery are good mail order sources. |

| The showiest forsythia is going to be one that blooms. The break even temperature here is about -15F. Colder than that, and the F x intermedia types get their flower buds frosted. So a determining factor is going to be how cold you actually get. |

| I cannot offer a recommendation without knowing where they are going, how close to house, etc. Dan |
