Harry Lauder Walking Stick is straight and tall Tree

Corryn

Hello, I purchased two of these plants, they were approximately a foot tall and curvy when I planted them 10 years ago on either side of the gate that enters into my backyard. They grew quickly and are now about 20 feet tall with only a couple remaining curvy branches.
In the past when they were small I tried clipping the quick growing straight growths, none were curvy, and eventually I just gave up and let it grow how it wanted to. The trees are beautiful the way they frame the gate entrance but I just want to know, what went wrong?
Anyone else have this problem?
Btw, I purchased these plants through a mail-order company.
I also purchased a tri-color Rose of Sharon which is doing very well.
Thank you
