Can't tell you how appropriate it is for your zone but here, the plant does just fine in part shade, does not appear to be bothered with aphids as much as other viburnum types and doublefiles tend to be viburnum beetle resistant. Most forms are going to be very low branching and develop into a very wide, horizontally layered plant.

We have two Doublefile 'Maresii', planted as very small shrubs in 2008. They need a lot of room to spread! They face south, get morning and midday sun and are shaded by the house in mid- to late afternoon. The one in the photo is now about 6-7 ft. tall. The other one is easily 8-ft. tall and 10-ft across, and I am very glad we planted it 5-ft away from our screened porch, because this year, it just began to bump into the screens and I had to trim back one side.

We also have three Judds along that same side of the house, and they are absolutely wonderful. No pests or diseases on either shrub, except for a very minor aphid infestation on the Judds one year. These are far and away my favorite shrubs in our landscape. At last count, we had 24 Viburnums here, and I'm sure I'll be adding more.

Both would be fine in Z5. They have survived extremes in temperatures and snowfall in the five years since we planted them. If something can survive in Kansas, I think it can survive anywhere.
