| I planted Abelia 'Edward Goucher' in a north facing spot five feet from the foundation of the house. This is its second summer of growth. I chose this shrub because it can tolerate shade. In the summer it receives sun from overhead and the west from 1:30 till 7:30.
Last winter snow piled up on the shrub and broke the main upward growing branches. I pruned it back in the spring to encourage growth, but it took till late August to produce two upward growing stems. Mostly it's growing horizontal, looking almost like a ground cover. I'd like it to grow to be the five foot high shrub it's advertised to be. I'm assuming it will, but what can I do to promote this? |

| hard to say w/o a picture .... but if you have the two verticals.... perhaps its time to remove the remaining horizontals ... renovation of a shrub usually takes about 3 years ... google : RENOVATION PRUNING OF SHRUBS .... ken |

| Just have to wait a little longer. Might be a little more vigorous in a sunny position. In cool climates like mine abelias are shrubs for warm sunny positions. In nature also liable to be found in sunny places. |
