What to do with a monster climbing rose?

I have a shade structure in my garden that is about ten feet high. It has a lattice roof that is probably ten feet by ten feet square. Three years ago, I planted Mdme. Alfred Carriere climbing rose on it. It has climbed up to the roof and is sprawling over it as planned. The problem is, the flowering stems that emerge from the prostrate canes get five or six feet high before they bloom. It is just a mess! I pruned all those canes back six weeks ago to just two nodes on each and they are that high again with no blooms yet.
Is the problem that I chose too big a rose? Should I just tear it out and plant another rose, or am I missing something?

Donna, as mostly a lurker I can see from your posts that you are a knowledgeable gardener. You know in your heart what you must do to solve the problem. Plants just grow so big in warm climates. Below is a link on the types of climbers by Steve Jones, current president of the American Rose Society. You might wish to pay particular attention to the LCI classification. On my arbor I use Aloha, but I've also grown America and 4th of July. Pick your poison as they say.

Here is a link that might be useful: Climbing roses

though roses need some supplemental food .. perhaps this monstrosity is getting too much food.. based on its excessive green growth ...

but i do agree with mary .... if it is NOT pleasing you... be done with it .... or as i have said other places.. FEAR YOUR SUCCESS.... lol

Okay. Well, good. You see, this was my first climbing rose experience and I planted it on the advice of Antique Rose Emporium helpers. (Of course, they couldn't actually SEE my spot.) I guess I just needed "permission" to pull it out and try another. Thanks, y'all. Oh, and I have given it NO food in over a year...(monster)
