Any luck with a shrub in part sun, drier soil?

Any recommendations for a shrub or perennial with the following needs/attributes:

- Part sun
- Well drained soil
- More dry than moist
- 2'-4' X 2'-4'

Key thing is I want something with a long bloom period, or multi-seasonal interest, ie shorter bloom, but reliable fall color.

I'm getting rid of the Snowmound Spirea that are there now. They are too boring...no fall color, no fruit, no varigetion and SHORT bloom period.

I have good luck with Maple leaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium) in part shade with dryer conditions. GREAT fall color and nice berries.

Where are you located?

Can't say I've come across the acerifolium before. Might be a little too big?

I'm in zone 5, milwaukee area.

I was thinking a reblooming or long blooming daylilly, but I thought I continue to research.

Maple leaf viburnum is native to the US, see distribution map below. You can certainly prune as needed to keep it lower, but you're right - 2x4 is pretty short..

How about an 'Anthony Waterer' Spirea?

Perennials: Salvia 'Black Cherry' or 'Wild Thing'. In bloom now and will go until frost. Not heavy bloom, but vivid and constant. Do not cut back until spring.

Shrub: Spirea 'Ogon', slightly taller than you want but with gorgeous gold leaves.

How long have you had those Salvia culivars? Zone 5b would be pushing it, so wondering what your success has been.

I'm technically 5a, and some winters can be classified as 4b.

The ogdon is something to consider. Can you report on its fall color, realiability?

Oh yeah, I am looking for something that gets anywhere from 2' to 4' tall and same in width.

I've had the Salvias through last winter, which was one of the coldest in years, temps around zero. High Country Gardens lists them as hardy through 5. But don't cut them back, and give them plenty of time to get going in spring. I nearly gave up, but they came back finally like gangbusters.

I don't know about fall color in the Ogon, but its golden willowy leaves are stunning.

most shrubs.. are drought resistent.. and never need to be watered.. kinda by definition ...

BUT NOTHING THAT IS NEWLY PLANTED IS LIKE THAT ...

no matter what you plant.. you are responsible of all water the first year.. and in drought the second.. and then you can rely on its ability to need no further care from you ...

just wanted to make sure you didnt buy something and think right off the bat.. that it will take a dry area .. as your facts state ...

good luck

Understood, in fact you should watch for watering the first 2-3 seasons.

I'd prefer to match plants were they thrive...in this case a shrub that prefers a well drained, dry site. So I wouldn't put a m. type hydrangea there.

Sure anything could work there once establish, but I like happy healthy plants.
