Ilex Crenata Compacta (mini Japanese holly)--defoliated!

What on earth could have caused this? This is part of a formal hedge I am growing, and everything else looks fine. Actually, even the remaining leaves look pretty good.

There are no deer around here--it's a semi urban suburb.

It seemed to happen very abruptly.

It's not the work of deer or other animals -- the dead leaves are visible on the ground under the plant, brown, mainly to the right of the photo.

Probably a disease problem of some sort, or maybe some kind of fertilizer burn or herbicide burn?

You're right that the leaves are all around the plant.

Definitely no herbicide around there used by us--last time I used Roundup was a year ago in the back yard (this is the front/side yard). Last fertilization was in June, and everything looked happy afterwards.

There is a vole problem in the backyard, but not an enormous one, and unlike the vole-damaged plants, I really don't see any sign of ground disturbance.

I am not sure when this happened but I think it was very fast.
