Tsugajunkie is right its The Sweet Fern. It has a great herbal smell to the foliage like its relative bayberry. It tends to thrive on disturbance and appears from nowhere after a fire.

One of my favorite edibles of Wisconsn's Northwoods (along with gaultheria procumbens). Seasoning chicken or turkey with it is quite nice. I also heard of one gentleman who would collect bags of it to dry and drink a tea to ease his arthritis.

I didn't realize it grew so well in zone 7.
