| Trying to decide if I should transplant these shrubs this fall (even right now) or wait until early spring.
3'x4' Dwarf Arctic Willow - Planted 2 years ago
Any thoughts? If I do it this fall I figure I get a head start on the new bed I'm putting in. If I do it in the spring, I should be able to cut the willows about 12" to the ground so they are more managable. But I don't know if you should prune them like that just before transplanting. |

| As it is very hardy the willow can be done in fall, after the leaves drop. The Bailey hydrangea might be a little susceptible to cold damage if disturbed in fall in your zone. Check the hardiness zone given for it, wait until end of winter if is marginal there (as I would expect it would be). Don't see how the willow would care if you whacked it in fall or end of winter. The only thing is would be likely to make better root growth next spring if it had an intact top at that time. Maybe wait until the second spring in the new location before cutting it down again. |

| Is there any reason I shouldn't transplant now? I would assume these fast growing plants can recover quickly? Ground freezes around mid-November. The Hydrangea is zone 4, I'm in 5. |

| Too hot now. Shrubs are best moved in late fall. Wait at least until mid-October. |

| Only reason I am attempting to make the move now is the next 7 day forecast is mid/upper 70s and lows in the upper 50s. Its really been a mild summer here in Milwaukee. We had one 90 degree week in late June, of course that was right after I freaking transplanted a 10 yr old Koreanspice Viburnum. Only one stems dropped its leaves, stem is still green. Seems to be ok. |
