wexgardener, I refer you to your previous questions about this. As Mike said, it's a Viburnum, so cut it back as far as you like. But don't cut anything to 'internodes', that leaves stubs which will die off. Cut to a node and cut as close to the node as you can. New growth will be in the same direction as the bud at the node. So to get outward growth cut to an outward facing bud.

Although your location is given as US, I seem to remember, and going by your spelling of 'centre', that you are in the UK (maybe only until next Thursday!!) or at least the British Isles. Guelder Rose is Viburnum opulus. It's a native here which is so tough it's used in farm hedges and can be cut back as hard as you like. It's not what Ken would call froo froo at all.
