shrub to compliment lilac bushes

We have planted this spring about 12 lilac bushes across our back yard hoping to get a little privacy screen back there. We planted the bushes about 10 ft apart. What could we plant between but in front of the lilac to compliment it. Doesnt necessarily have to be a flowering bush but something to add color especially in the fall. Thanks

Depending on degree of deer resistance (occassionl browsing vs rampid browing) Barberry is a good choice if your really worried about deer damage.

Otherwise you have choices like, Fine Wine Weigela for season long color contrast.

Depending on your size requirements, you could go with a Mohican Vibrunum.

Has a darker, bigger, duller leaf to contrast with the Lilac. Gets dark reddish purple fall color.

Chokeberry (black or red) blends into the landsacpe but has good fruit and vibrant fall color.

All are suitable to dry conditions.

I have spirea planted next to my lilac. It's the kind with lime green foliage and hot pink flowers. There are several sized varieties of this bush so I'm not sure of the name to recommend. It just makes a good foliage pattern and color contrast. I also have red ninebark in my garden for foliage contrast. It has lovely flowers in the spring too. There's a golden variety too, so I might do a mix. Fothergilla has beautiful fall color but I don't know how it does with deer. Rugosa rose bushes would be nice too, although I have heard that deer eat roses too. Azaleas might do OK unless it is baking hot sun.

Japanese barberry is on the poop list in some eastern States, it being weedy in the region.

If you plant a V. lantana 'Mohican' and a V. 'Allegheny', you'll get gorgeous berries on both to boot.

lilac have the potential to be huge plants ....

you spaced them 10 feet apart ...

i hope you realize... that anything you might want to plant in front of them.. needs to be 5 to 10 feet in front

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Ken, is 10 feet apart not enough? We were looking for something that would grow fairly quickly.

10 feet is fine...

all i was pointing out... or trying to .... is that you need 5 to 10 feet in front of it ... i dont know how to say it otherwise ....

if they are on a north south line...

then they need 5 to 10 feet east and west ...

Well, not sure if my suggestions will work for you. Azaleas and ninebark might be pushing it in your zone. My friend had a Carleseii viburnum in her yard, not super hardy but smells oh so heavanly and it blooms after the lilac. Also mock orange and snowball bushes, with the smaller snowballs (sorry, don't know the scientific names of those bushes). My coworker used to bring in the most lovely bouquets of lilacs mixed with the small white snowballs for the office. Both the mock orange and old fashioned smaller snowballs are hard to find at the average nursery though, not sure why.
