Need suggestion for shrub for wet soil

Jamshed Mulla

I have a spot in my yard that is unavoidably wet. (Surrounded by driveway/walkway), in a swale, no good drainage, deep soil is clayey.)

I planted a Daphne Carol Mackie and it was beautiful for about 2 years. Then just browned out and died. I planted another - same thing, 2 beautiful years of flowering and growth before a total brownout.

I was then told that Mackies don't like "wet feet." As soon as their roots reach the wet soil, they rot and die.

So, I am in the market for a nice looking, ornamental shrub that will tolerate this type of soil. A couple of other requirements are that it stays relatively short (3-4 feet). A tall shrub in this spot will look awkward. And, it MUST be deer resistant!! They have taken over our area. We call them "rodents with antlers."

Suggestions PLEASE!!

Thank you.
