ken - thanks, I just realized after posting that there might be a forum designated for propagating but it is not very active - so maybe someone here could advise me. I did read somewhere on this forum that someone just put the stems in dirt - but that seemed too easy so I figured I read it wrong. Maybe that's what I will try that just for experimenting. carrie

If you are talking about E. fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' or 'Emerald n'Gold' they roots very easy.
I don't know about September, but if you'd prune it in a spring you basicly would have two options:
a) sand/peat based mix
or
b) stick them in any lose soil

Alternatively you may don't want to prune it, but rather use ground layering method instead.

Thanks, ego. Do you mean that September would not be a good time because it doesn't give the plant time to establish itself before it gets cold? We generally hit frost around end November, but of course, that could change to much earlier - we never know. Also, when you say loose soil, in other words, strip the leaves and basically stick it in the ground and that's it? I do that with Montauk Daisies and that works find for me. I have tried it with Emerald Coast, and, are the leaves suppposed to fall off and just leave a stick? How long before it actually grows new leaves?
