I have two P. 'Diablo' and one 'Summer Wine' and am very impressed with them. I'm thinking of adding a 'Darts Gold' and would like to hear your experience--size, persistence of gold color through the season, etc., especially from folks in the Middle Atlantic through New England. Many thanks.

| I have Dart's Gold. It's been in the ground about 5 years and is probably 4-5' tall and wide. The form is wider than tall The golden foliage color is best in the spring and does fade to mostly green on my plant but it's in part sun. Perhaps in full sun it would hold color better. Mine gets odd colored shoots-copper colored to start then turning to black. In the spring I snip them off. Here's a picture of the flowers and spring foliage. Although it's quite attractive in the spring I just can't get excited about this shrub and have been thinking about removing it. Maybe I'll just cut it way back next spring and see what happens.

Beautiful useful & cold hardy...Can't beat that combination. This mid size shrub lights up my semi shade garden & constantly wins the attention from visitors asking what on earth it is. I tested it for 2 years & it's a die hard here in Michigan. Comes through wonderful. So highly recommend it that I just bought 2 more to integrate into my yard.

Not in the Mid Atlantic region, but like fosson above in Michigan, it's a great plant for me in Minnesota. I'd really wanted the Diablo, but picked up 2 Dart's Gold on the real cheap at Home Depot late last season - figuring they'd test their mettle surviving a winter. They leafed out beautifully this spring in a semi-shaded spot and I like the color contrast against some darker shrubs. For me, it's a keeper.

I agree that it's a phenomenal shrub! The color is a knockout and I have it planted w/ Diabolo, Summer Wine and Coppertina in a mass - gorgeous!

Prone to sunburn, plant where shaded a bit.

I am in the mid atlantic and mine is beautiful. I give it lots of water and it is planted in a million dollar hole. That has always been my advice plant the 5 dollar plant in the million dollar hole. That translate to dig in lots of organic matter.

I was wondering if you kept your 'Dart's Gold' Sue and did you cut it back? I have one and I find I am can't seem to get very excited about it, either. Not sure what I will do with it. Mine is lime green more of the time then not and is also in part shade. I don't think I have a place to move it that gets more sun.
