| Can anyone comment how high this can grow in zone 5? I read that cutting it back in the early spring will keep it shorter, but I also read it has an aggressive, fast growth rate, ideal for sunny locations.
I'm looking to replace an ornamental tree with the false spirea shrub, and the requirements are fast growth with height...to obscure the view from peering neighbors. I'm not concerned with the suckering habit as the area is a wedged diamond shape between concrete drive and walkways, no where else to go, and full sun. I'm hoping this is exactly what I'm looking for, though I hate the idea of removing my ornamental tree, but I'd rather have the privacy. If anyone has a FULL SIZE picture of the stately shrub, I'd appreciate it. Most pics on the web are close ups of the foliage or flowers. Please comment. Thanks |

| I'm in Wi, zone 4b, and it will grow to 6 or 7 feet tall and twice as wide if you let it. It is an agressive, suckering thug in my opinion. I used it for a privacy screen for a few years too. But it drops all of its leaves at the first hint of frost, and then your screen is gone, just left with a thicket of twigs. If you prune it, then it is not as tall. It does not give you much privacy through the winter. I would not recommend it. There are much better choices for privacy screens, and shrubs in general, in my opinion. I have ripped all of it out, killed it with Round-up and replaced it with Arborvitaes, Weigelas, Viburnums, and Physocarpus for a mixed shrub border. Much more attractive, and a partially evergreen, year round screen. |
