Too late to plant my new baby Lilac Sensation?

I got this Lilac as a gift, in June. It is now mid September and I still have yet to plant it.
I have, however, watered it faithfully all summer long and she/he seems happy, but eager to get in the ground.

It is currently in a 5 gallon container and I believe they got it at Lowes.

Winter is around the corner here ( zone 6, 25 miles from the coast - Massachusetts) and I worry that the cold might do this plant in.

What are your thoughts? Is it too late for my Lilac bush to prosper. Should I over winter it and plant in Spring?

Also the spot that I was going to put it in doesn't get direct sunlight, but rather dappled. Would you suggest I change the location to a full sun spot?

Can you tell I'm new at this???
Thanks!
Tulipsmiles

Fall is a good time for planting - you have a at least 2 months and probably more before the ground freezes. Plant in full sun and keep well watered until the ground freezes and the lilac should be fine. It will, in fact, be much better off in the ground than in a pot for the winter.

in my z5 .. 10/1 is the target.. a week or two either way .. with a deadline of about 11/1

giving it at least a month.. and preferably 2 months before ground freeze ...

your z6.. adds a week, at least to every number

its actually.. too early .. rather than too late.. to do this job
