Dappled willow's bark damage

Hi,

Our dappled willow 'Hakuro Nishiki' has been very recently damaged (please see photo below). Inserted on the top left of the picture is a hole created (not by us) within the past 12 hours and located less than 10 feet away from the willow.

We have spotted squirrels and rabbits nearby. Any suggestions on protecting the shrub from further harm? Thanks.

ignore the damage..

put a 'hardware cloth/chicken wire' fence around it ...

kill the vermin.. this aint no disney movie ...

put a big black pot over the hole.. with a rat trap.. baited with peanut butter... and see what you get ...

no reference on the hole size.. but i suspect chipmonkey ....
