| This is the view from my patio to my back lotline.
I'm not sure if I have too much going on here or what. But I basically have room for the following: 5 or so plants in front of the crab apple and dwarf spruces My question, should I repeat what I have in the bed now or introduce some thing new? From left to right:
The shrubs to the back, inbetween the dappled willows are dwarf arctic willows. If I were to add new, I would probably add gro low sumac, groundcover rose or rozanne/jolly bee geranium. If I were to repeat I would probably repeat the Tor Spirea, maybe the cool splash honeysuckle. |

| You're light years away from being a "collector". I'd say, don't repeat; take the opportuity to add something new. I wouldn't be without flowering almond. Can't offer any suggestions, but will offer an observation regarding "Pink Beauty" potentilla. I have one, and it's a star performer, bloom-wise and am all around very pleased with it. But have noticed, the pink blooms turn cream colored if the temps are above 80 degrees for more than two days running. Will revert to pink again when the temp drops. This summer, we only reached 80 or above on five random days so it stayed beautifully pink - but it was last season, and the season before, with more hot weather that I noted this happening. |

| My suggestion is to add some pink Knockout roses (single or double), they would add color, & mine don't get browsed much by the deer. And I live, literally, down the street from the forest preserve. They tolerate light shade, and they are extremely hardy. They will grow taller than 2', so I would plant the dwarf Norway spruces in front of them. I would also suggest calamint, lady's mantle and/or the geraniums to edge the bed. Looks nice! :) |

| To get away from the checkerboard effect you have now - with one of this and then one of that - re-organize the shrubs into interlocking drifts each consisting of one kind, that is where all the specimens of each kind are near one another in a flowing shape (drift). A drift of one kind, then a drift of another - instead of static, solitary specimens all spread out through the whole bed. |

| The dwarf artic willows are just place holders until the Dappled Willows fill in...eventually they should fill the space inbetween the crabapples. Do you have any pics of interlocking drifts that you speak of? I plan to put a grouping of Rozanne/Jolly Bee geraniums in front of the dappled willows. Then starting inbetween the far right dappled willow and small crabapple put a drift of a white groundcover rose ending in front of the first norway spruce. Then put dark pink mammmoth mum in front of the second spruce wrapping to the last spruce. |
