You don't say where you live. This plant is zone 9 and warmer. Are you in a mild zone?

I've never seen one in real life.

I'm in a a zone 9 Los Angeles so it's native. But apparently it's not very popular plant because this is first time I saw it in the garden..

It is a popular plant with me! As with many nursery items, they go in cycles. Starflowers used to be more common, then they became more difficult to find. They are a great, tough, plant-- drought resistant once established, lousy soil doesn't bother them, withstanding hot conditions and always look great with their nice, green foliage. Pests and diseases don't tend to be a problem. Then they flower for many months, thrilling bees and hummingbirds (although the spent petals can make a bit of litter, it is a small price). They are one of the easiest plants to espalier, taking pruning like a champ, and grow at a quick rate. I planted four more along a hot block wall last spring, where (get this) a row of Bougainvillea 'San Diego' failed to thrive after 2.5 years. The grewias are thriving.
