dying lilacs

I live on a farmstead that has huge lilacs that are very old. We had 3 years of drought that has stressed many plants but had decent rain earlier, now very dry and hot again. My lilacs are dying. The big branches are dead and can be pulled out of the ground as if they are rotting at ground level. The plants have created suckers but they seem not to be thriving either. I understand these plants may be as much as 30 years old and maybe just reaching the end of their time. Some of the plants are 12 feet tall but just seem to be dying rapidly now? Is this bacterial blight or borer or what does anyone think and can they be saved?
