Over-wintering a container buddleia...how?

Hello, I have the opportunity to purchase the "new" dwarf "Blue Chip" for 50% off at a local garden center. I'm not ready to plant it into the ground as we have to have an underground oil tank removed first. Can I plant this in a container, then transplant in the spring to its proper spot? How should I care for it--I have a fairly covered (though not enclosed) porch protected from winds. Do I water it, or just let it go dormant over the winter? Or will it be fine just sitting next to the house? Sorry for the dumb ??, I've never done this before.

hey

of the few things i find nearly impossible to grow in my z5 ... this is it ...

you are z6 ... so it might be a bit easier .... depending on whether you have a z6 or a z5 winter ...

i THINK the major problem with this plant.. for me anyway ... was or is.. wet feet ... in cold weather ...

IMHO.. keeping it potted will be problematic ... as there is such a fine line with retained moisture in a pot ...

ibso presto ergo .... [that means nothing.. lol] .... NO MATTER THE BARGAIN ... I WOULD SKIP IT ....

Shouldn't be a problem for you, and at that price worth a shot.

Repot into next size up, water thru the fall as needed. Then find a quiet spot in the garden and sink it into mulch. I routinely overwinter lots of these, most come thru just fine.

I too bought two of these at 50% off. I planted both in a new garden and plan to cover them with big pots for the winter. Come spring we'll see what kind of a bargain they were.

you could leave it in the existing pot/container, find a spot somewhere in the yard/garden, dig a hole, bury the pot to about the top, and apply some mulch around it. Do keep it slightly moist though until the ground freezes. Dig it up next spring when you're ready to plant.
