| I saw one of a very unusual blue purple color this weekend, out of town, planted in an industrial park. I've only seen shades of pink or white before, and up till now, hadn't cared much for the plant. It has some buds and lots of seed pods. None of the seed pods were ripe. I picked a few of the biggest pods I could find, though I don't know whether the seeds can be used. I also picked one stem.
Can I root this? I assume I should remove all buds and seedpods? |

| anything can be rooted.. given the right equipment ... check out the link .. for a multitude of suggestions .... yes.. it can be done.. will it be easy.. no ... you should have snapped a pic.. and asked the name of the cultivar.. and tracked down a supplier.. to insure it showing up in your yard .... google blue althea ... or hibiscus or ROS .... you should find a name or two ... good luck ken |

| Thanks for the links, Ken. Those could be handy for lots of things. I did take a photo, it's just not uploaded yet. I believe it's the cultivar Blue Satin. Taking the cutting was spur of the moment, as I didn't have the camera with me. As soon as I got home, I shot the bloom. I came on here, and saw references to Blue Satin, which seemed likely, so I google searched images, and that sure looks like it. If it doesn't root, I'll just look for one next year. Or maybe even if it does. :) |

| I have a White Chiffon Althea and it reseeds like crazy. Maybe there are sterile varieties out there and maybe yours won't seed easily, but when I looked White Chiffon up, I found this sight: http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/plantfinder/Plant.asp?code=C191, and it said, "This is a sterile cultivar that does not produce viable seed." Yeah, right! I almost laughed out loud. I pull up at least 50 new starts (and that's probably conservative) from seed every year. I don't mind pulling them up though, the blooms are so pretty and I even kept a seedling and planted it in another part of my garden. If you pull the seedlings out early enough, they come up pretty easily. If I were you and I really liked that variety, I would go back to that industrial park and pick some seedpods that have dried and plant them. Vickie |
