Transplanting an Oakleaf Hydrangea

Posted by ellwelsh 6 (My Page) on

I would like to transplant a small Oakleaf Hydrangea that I originally planted this Spring.
I noticed when searching a lot of things said to transplant when they are dormant. Is this the absolute best way?
I would really prefer to do it in the fall, would this be too risky?

Thanks for any help!

I tried for several years to get three Oakleaf Hydrangeas established and found repeatedly that they don't have a good survival rate when fall planted in zone 6 (that's my zone despite what my info says--the site hasn't let me change it). Also, a hard winter can kill them when they're small, but doesn't seem to bother well established, older plants.

They are slower growing when young, so I'm sure it hasn't rooted out much if you just planted it in spring.

IF you are moving it to better location I WOULD transplant it in a couple weeks depending on the forecast.

For example if its not in a protected location and will be exposed to west and north winds now, your much better off moving it to a location near the east side of the house.

You should transplant after it goes dormant/drops it's leaves.

Wouldn't it be suspectable to heaving if you transplant it at that point?

I'd think you'd be better off transplanting now so it has time to take root between now and November.

No more than usual , I think it's more stressful to the plant to move it while in leaf. The leaves don't have to be dropping off... to do it sooner, move it when the leaves start to turn color.

Normally shrubs and trees are moved after leaf drop in fall--here it's done well into December. But I repeat, my experience with far too many oakleaf hydrangeas is that they do not have a good survival rate with fall planting or transplanting. And they tend to die in a bad winter when they are small. Once established, they are fully hardy in my zone 6.

I transplant them in fall after leaf drop (normally recommended time), and have never had a problem with them surviving or doing well.

Thank you for all the advice.

I am a little scared to transplant it after the leaves have dropped.
Could it be safer to just wait until Spring?

Yes! Wait until spring for moving a small oakleaf hydrangea! They don't do well with fall planting. See above posts.
